A Message from the Vicar and Churchwardens

York Chair

York Chair

For a good number of years now, the chairs within the Church have been getting rather dated and are fairly uncomfortable, so their replacement has been high on our list of priorities. The PCC has now decided to go ahead with this project and it is planned that the Nave and Lady Chapel chairs will be replaced as soon as possible this year. A suitable folding and stackable chair is being sourced for the side aisles which will be used when the size of the congregation or concert audience requires this. At other times it is planned to leave the aisles clear for the benefit of displays, exhibitions, and other presentations.

The criteria by which different chairs have been considered include:

  • Stackability and linkability
  • Stability and comfort
  • Durability, visual effect, and suitability for the building
  • Price, value for money, and country of origin
  • Effect on acoustics - important in a building renowned for its quality of music

Before/After

Inset shows how the church will look

After much deliberation and consultation the PCC has chosen the York chair as photographed above. It is manufactured in oak and upholstered in a Savannah shade real leather. The cost per chair is approx. £150 which includes VAT at 20%.

We are confident that everyone connected with St James will wish to support this project and we therefore invite you to make a donation as generously as your means allow. If your donation exceeds the cost of a chair, a suitably engraved "plaque" may be affixed to each chair to signify the donor or the memory of a named person, and this will exist for the life of the chair.

We sincerely ask you to consider supporting this Appeal and there are a variety of ways in which this can be done, as set out below.
